German Shepherds are known for their intelligence. They are eager to please their owners and are very loyal to their masters. They are fearless & alert which makes them extraordinary watch & guard dogs. They can be territorial so training and socializing is very important with this breed. German Shepherds can be very active, alert and playful!
The German Shepherd has a hard, straight double coat which is medium in length. This breed is a heavy shedder and typically sheds heavier during seasonal changes. The hair around their neck is generally thicker.
The most recognizable color of the German Shepherd is the solid black and tan. Their coat also comes in a variety of other colors including: solid black or gray; gold & light gray markings; gray with lighter or brown markings (sable). They may also appear in white. White is considered an improper color in the breed and is not recognized by the CKC.
The German Shepherd breed requires frequent brushing, 2 – 3 times a week is recommended. During a seasonal change, they will require a bit more brushing to avoid having your house filled with many short, dark hairs. This breed does not require to be bathed. Bathing could cause the depletion of natural oils stored in the fur.

The German Shepherd breed was bred in Germany during the 1800’s as a working, herding and military dog. Captain Max Von Stephanitz is often recognized for standardizing the breed as we know it today.
