My German Shepherd is almost 12 1/2 years old now. For the past few years it's been getting harder for her to get up and down as her hips are hurting her.
She goes out everyday, in at night or in when I'm at home during the day.

Yesterday she did not want to go out at all. She's not gone out to pee or eat since I bought her in Friday night. This morning she would not get up to go out, I brought some food and water in for her and she would not eat it. She's still laying down.

I know large breeds don't live as long as smaller ones. I'm thinking she's on her downhill slide now.

How long do Shepherds usually live? Does this sound like she's on her last leg?

I'm sorry as well.your dog is doing exactly what our Rottweiler did shortly before he passed. I kept him at home for my sons, and actually kept him about 8 hours too long...I do so wish I had called the vet for one more house call. I won't go into detail, but it really was not a peaceful passing and I wish I had done more for my guy that was the light of my life.

I think it's imperative that you get your buddy to a vet - the dog won't pee if it won't drink, and if it won't drink then all the systems will start shutting down from dehydration.

You've had a wonderfully long time - and I know your dog has loved you beyond measure. Take her in and see if perhaps she is ill - maybe she's just sick - but you've gone 48 hours without anything in or out - that's just hard on her body any way you look at it...and please let us know, our thoughts will be with you.

Take your dog in to the vet for an exam. It could be something is ailing her that can be treated, it could be her way of telling you it's time.

12 years is quite old for a GSD, in general terms a GSD average lifespan is 10-13 years.

Wishing the best for you in the situation, it's never easy.

My dog behaved pretty much the same when we knew it was time. She was an 11½ year old Lab, which is also a relatively long life for a large breed dog. I know what you are going through, and my thoughts are with you.

I don't know what to write. Just want to say I am sorry. I wish my GSD would never grow old. But it is just a wish.

GSDs are known to have Hip Dysplasia and Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) which progress slowly and is quiet painful for older dogs. When was it last time you took your girl to the vet? Have you ever done any X-rays to check her hips? She might be in pain and vet visit is a must.
I have 2 GSDs and both had x-rays done at age of 2 years old. Both of them have fair hips.
You can't cure it unless surgery is done at earlier age. My dogs take vitamins to help them stay pain free, Ester-C, Glucosamine with Chondroitin and MSM, we have pool, so they swim everyday. They eat raw food and get their excercise daily.

Your girl is obviously in pain, and you owe her visit to the vet. When her time comes you will see it in her eyes, it would be the best thing if you let her go and set her free from pain. I know how hard it is, but you should do what is best for your pet, and end her suffering if she is indeed in pain.

Best of luck to you, let us know how she's doing.
