Although basic color genetics in the dog are fairly simple, when you get beyond the basics things can become quite complex. The study of color in the dog is also complicated by the fact that many authors have used the same terms for different genetic results, and many breeds use common terms for colors and patterns to indicate quite different appearances. (What we call a sable in GSD's, for example, has nothing to do with what a collie person refers to as sable... and the terms brown and liver are used in many ways). Since questions about color genetics are asked so often, I've tried to put the most reliable information that I have found down in one place. There are just too many variables to keep in your head. Malcolm B. Willis, Ph.D. is my major source. His 1989 book GENETICS OF THE DOG, his 1992 book PRACTICAL GENETICS FOR DOG BREEDERS, and his 1991 book THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG, A GENETIC HISTORY are great references. He does an excellent job of explaining the cases where the data is unclear or contradictory. There seems to be 11 major gene locations that determine the color and pattern of a dog. At each of these locations from 2 to 6 versions of the gene have been identified. Not all of these versions are present in every breed, a fact that simplifies our discussion of color in the German Shepherd Dog somewhat. 1) The AGOUTI series. This series is thought to contain six variations (or alleles), and in most discussions about GSD color this is the location (locus) we are concerned about. I will list the alleles in order of dominance from the most dominant to the most recessive (meaningm that an allele mentioned higher in the list will be expressed in the physical make up of the dog (phenotype) even when it is paired with an allele lower on the list (the actual versions of the genes present make up what is called the genotype)). a Dominant Black not thought to exist in GSD's (see #11 below). "A" would also be called dominant self-color. ay Golden a rarely seen version of sable. "ay" would also be called agouti. aw Gray what we usually call sable in GSD's (both gray and red sables are genetically the same at this locus... red sables carrying the recessive for redder tan - see the Intensity series below). "aw" would also be called agouti. A typical aw gray sable. as Saddle our common black and tan GSD's (with the variations in tan color controlled by the intensity series below). While there is probably another locus that controls the amount of saddle, it has not been scientifically documented as far as I know.

Lukas, my dog, is a 160 pound . When he stands on his hind legs, he tops out at just under 6' tall. When he decides to pull- as in playing tug-of-war- whomever is on the other end gets yanked forward. When he displays his teeth, the viewer will note they are large and sharp. Mastiffs were bred as guard dogs; they are loyal and they are protective; they would be tied up at the front of a Roman house, and their job was to insure no one got past them into the house without their owner's permission. And they were very good at their job. Now, imagine you trying to come into my fenced yard and I didn't want you there, but as a small, elderly female, who doesn't always know where the ammunition clip for the handgun is being kept, all I have for protection is Lukas. And, in my stress-y, high-pitched voice, I indicate to Lukas I fear you. Can you imagine how Lukas is going to react? He is going to gallump over towards you, much, much faster than you believe possible- his movement looks clumsy and ungainly, but he covers a lot of ground fast. And, after the first bark or so when he noticed you, he is going to be silent- never a good sign in an attacking dog. He will leap up at you, one hundred-sixty pounds of prime-of-life canine muscle going for your upper chest and throat; even if you are well-braced for impact, he will likely knock you over. He's built to do that and you are not built to withstand that.

Hip Dysplasia is hereditary. Of all the hereditary ailments of German Shepherds, the most common probably still is Hip Dysplasia (but meanwhile less than 1 in 5 dogs is affected). It's painful for your dog, and it's frustrating for yourself too. It can become apparent in adult German Shepherds of any age, often as young as two years. The disease is orthopaedic in nature and will lead to an abnormal formation of the hip, which then causes looseness in the joints and cartilage damage. The result is another disease, Arthritis (see 8). It can make movements of your GSD much tougher and painful too. Who Gets Hip Dysplasia Hip Dysplasia is a genetic disease that passes down through a specific lineage of dogs. If you have two loose hip dogs mate with each other, the result is often a Hip Dysplasia stricken puppy. Of course, not all dogs with the disease suffer from it or show symptoms, so it can be hard to determine if your new puppy has a heredity even if its parents have been X-rayed and determined healthy. There are some environmental factors too, including Obesity (see 25) and excessive proteins, vitamins and minerals in food - as is typical for enriched industrial dog food. Items and substances that are designed to make puppies grow faster have been shown to increase the risk of Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis (see 8) as well. Warning Signs Hip Dysplasia will be indicated by a drop in energy levels, difficulty in standing or moving and lameness in your dog’s back legs. Your German Shepherd will stop wanting to use stairs, especially when going up, and will rarely want to stand up on its back limbs or jump up on anything. German Shepherds with Hip Dysplasia will start hopping with their back legs when walking, and they will show signs of soreness when they lie down, especially after exercise. If your German Shepherd shows any of these signs, regardless of its age, get it to the vet for an X-ray as soon as possible. Treating Hip Dysplasia The attempts to treat Hip Dysplasia vary depending on the severity of the ailment. The more conservative non-invasive treatments include weight loss, pain medication, the top joint health supplement Nutramax Dasuquin with MSM, the Back and Hip Support Brace, and physical therapy and basic exercise routines to work the hips. Nutramax Dasuquin with MSM is a clinically researched, freely available joint health supplement with a well over a decade long track record. Vets frequently prescribe it to improve the dog's mobility in cases of Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia (see 3), and Arthritis (see 8). It may also help with Panosteitis (see 7), Hind Leg Weakness (see 13), and Lumbosacral Stenosis (see 15). It has only positive reviews from virtually every dog owner who tried it - which alone makes it an impressive remedy! Other methods aim to salvage the degenerating hips before they get too worn out by the disease. For example the Bottoms-up Leash, the Walkabout Rear Harness, or the Walkin Lift Harness. The only real way to know which treatment is best for your German Shepherd when you notice the early warning signs is to visit a vet and have the necessary X-ray and tests done to determine the existence and extent of Hip Dysplasia. The vet will then determine what works best to treat the particular issues of your dog. However, if your dog's front legs are weak too, then your only chance is to make the investment in a customized quad cart that can support all four legs. You will need to consider this carefully though - not only because of the cost, but because having to use a quad cart puts a lot of stress on your German Shepherd. Sorry that this topic doesn't end on a happier note, but that's because GSD Hip Dysplasia really isn't a happy thing to have. Neither for your dog, nor for you.

The Coydog is a mix between the wild coyote and the domestic dog. Coydogs usually have very piercing eyes. They are said to be not generally playful or outgoing. Anyone keeping one of these dogs needs to be a 100% firm, confident, consistent pack leader. Weak-minded people will run into problems. This animal needs someone who understands natural dog behavior and will work with the instincts of the dog. Without someone who is stronger-minded, calm but very authoritatively firm, you will end up with a dog that is quick to bite in fearful situations where it feels threatened, angry or afraid. They may end up with nervous, shy or fearful personalities. Coydogs are not a good choice of a pet for most people, as most people do not have the knowledge regarding natural canine instinct and/or are not strong minded enough to take one of these animals on. NOTE: Some claim the Coydog to be an urban legend, while others beg to differ. It is a genetic fact that dogs, coyotes and wolves can mate, subsequently producing fertile offspring, however the argument is, mating cycles of the two species differ: coyotes go in to heat between January and March and have pups in May or June, while most domestic dogs have their pups in the winter. This theory is not foolproof however, as some dog breeds go into heat twice a year. Others say social habits of the domestic dog and the coyote make the possibility of mating rare. Wild coyotes are not that likely to become friendly with a domestic dog; they are more likely to eat the dog. Female coyotes go into heat once a year. Male coyote sperm count remains dormant or very low for most of the year. In the spring it raises for about 2 months in conjunction with the female coyote’s heat cycle. Male coyotes are known to stay with one female mate for the entire season and have been seen assisting in the care of the puppies. However, it is possible for coyotes and domestic dogs to mate. For example, if a male coyote comes into contact with a large female domestic dog that is in heat and there are no other female coyotes around for the male to mate with, or if a large male domestic dog comes into contact with a lone female coyote, it is genetically and theoretically possible for them to produce a litter of puppies. D.Jay the Coydog (coyote / Heeler hybrid) at about 6 months old—D.Jay's mom is a Heeler and his dad is a coyote. A note from D.Jay's owners; "We live on 80 acres in Alberta. We are in the middle of nowhere. I call it GOD's country. There is almost no land left like ours around here as many subdivisions with houses on about 2 to 5 acres are being built. The coyotes are losing their homes to these new subdivisions; so they are now moving to the open land. We have a huge population of coyotes in this area. They are seen in the daytime in people's yards, which is very unusual for their breed. Hunger has made them very bold in our parts. But here in Alberta, the people are allowed to poison them and also have programs to control the population. In other words, it's just a way to kill these animals so people can invade their habitat. This is just my point of view as others will argue with me that the coyotes are pesty creatures that dig through their garbage and are even known for killing small family pets. We got this adorable pup (D.Jay) when he was about 6 weeks old from our neighbor, who actually found her female with a coyote male. He has grown up with our 4 kids and our other 4 dogs. He is very friendly and loyal to our family. He does not fight with other dogs but he does have his own little quirks. Since a pup D.Jay had dug holes around our house and it is there that he sleeps at night, always curled into a tight ball (unless I sneak him to the house to sleep with me; even then he curls into a tight ball and sleeps closely to my side). When someone drives into the yard the other dogs bark and run around the car while D.Jay will run behind the house and hide until he knows it is someone we know or if it is safe to come back to the front of the house. It is not until then that D.Jay will return and then his tail wags and everyone gets kisses. Even though he does not howl he has a very different bark or growl than a pure dog. It is throaty and high; it is almost comical. We are all happy that we got a dog as special as D.Jay. I find there is nothing more beautiful than to be in bed at night with the windows open listening to the coyotes howl. It is such a mystical sound." D.Jay the Coydog (coyote / Heeler hybrid) at about 6 months old Sacchetto the Coydog (domestic dog / coyote hybrid) was found abandoned and left to die in a plastic bag when she was only 2 months old. Her owner says, "A young couple walking their dog (an Afghan) in West LA passed by a moving plastic bag in the road and checked it out and found her. Sacchetto means "little bag" in Italian (often little plastic bag). Here in Los Angeles apparently it's a big thing to bring your female shepherd who is in heat up to the Hollywood hills and leave her there tied up so she will mate with a male coyote. She has the total personality of a coyote—though not the piercing eyes. She is EXTREMELY shy and timid of ANYONE but me. Her back legs sort of go off to the side when she runs, as do coyotes. She is smarter than she is even aware of. I can't even explain it, but she is very intelligent. I also have a Doberman who is very smart, too, but nothing compared to Sacchetto. Unfortunately, she seems to have taken on the hips of the German Shepherd in her, as she was diagnosed with severe degenerative hip disease this past December. Acupuncture is helping a lot, so is the raw food diet I just switched all of them on to. My holistic/Western vet suggested that due to the coyote in her, she would probably do very well on the raw food diet. So I've switched them all (I have a pack of 4)."

To protect yourself, you must be careful and believe only what you see and not what you are told. It is highly recommended to arrange for an inspection of the home where the pets are bred. This allows you to check that the mother and other animals are living in suitable conditions, being well cared for, and are in good health. Remember that the Kijiji Pets section is NOT intended to facilitate uncontrolled breeding, irresponsible commercial pet trading, trade of dogs or any other animal for the purpose of fighting or stud services. Any ads that are suspected of promoting this kind of activity or reported to us will be removed. Users are responsible for adhering to the applicable conditions in relation to adopting, buying, selling or listing of an ad on Kijiji. Kijiji encourages, where possible, the adoption of pets and encourages all pet owners to have their animals spayed or neutered as well as microchipped. When looking for a pet, it is important to meet the breeder or seller and examine the pet before agreeing to anything. Since Kijiji is local to your community, this should be easy to arrange. Never adopt/buy a pet from someone who is unwilling to let you see how and where the animal is living! Find more information about Pet Ownership here >

You will find people telling that there is difference in colour between alsatian & German Shepherd. Some people act further intelligent to tell structural differences.Few say it is the size difference. An Alsatian is from Alsace in France and a German Shepherd from Germany. The name German Shepherd was used in America. The German Shepherds was used by both sides to fight during the war. But the British didn’t want to call their dogs German sothey decided on the name Alsatian. Later, after the war, the British changed the name back to German Shepherd Dog .There is NO difference between a German Shepherd Dog and an Alsatian. ( German Shepherd Training ) The original nameis German shepherd Dog. During the world war britishers named it Alsatian, after the German French border area of Alsace-Lorraine. In 1977, postnumerous campaigns by breeders the name of the breed was changed back to GermanShepherd Dog; known as GSD in the short form. the German Shepherd Dog(Alsatian) has become one of the most popular breeds with pet owners, whoconsider them loving and loyal companions.

The achievements of Covy-Tucker Hill are represented by one symbolic dog, Ch. Covy-Tucker Hill's Manhattan OFA H/E ROM. In 1987 "Hatter" was awarded "Best in Show" at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. He was handled throught his career by James Moses, and owned by Jane Firestone and Shirlee Braunstein. Twenty-five years later, he is still the only GSD to win Best in Show in the history of the Westminster Kennel Club. "Hatter" is the winningest male German Shepherd Dog in dog show history, and the #4 show dog of all time, all breeds. Gloria Birch on Manhattan: When I started in my quest to show a German Shepherd Dog, little did I realize that with my first love CH. Kovaya's Contessa CD.ROM, I would spend the rest of my life involved in the pursuit and love of breeding better German Shepherd Dogs. In my 20s I fell deeply in love with Covy, (my nickname for Contessa; Covy is part of the kennel name Covy-Tucker Hill). I had a passion for showing dogs and Contessa was my first home-bred Champion. She had an amazing temperament; full of life, loved kids, water, balls, cans, and plastic bottles, anything she could use to get my attention. It always worked. She was always making me laugh. She was the beginning for me, and will always be closest in my heart. Her selflessness, integrity, and honesty were of the purest forms. She is the grandmother of BIS Ch Covy-Tucker Hill's Manhattan. Contessa was a Bernd von Kallengarten granddaughter. We bred her to BIS Ch. Lakeside's Gilligan's Island. Gilligan’s mother was Cobert's Melissa ROM, highest living ROM dam for many, many years. I saw Gilligan and his sister Golly with their owners Danny Dwier and my dearest mentor Connie Beckhardt in Colorado at a Futurity. Danny and Connie co-owned Melissa. We became fast friends. Gilligan was a gorgeous stallion of a male and I knew Contessa had to be bred to him. His sister was also beautiful which meant that the litter was deep in quality and should produce true to type. Gilligan became a famous BIS dog before I even got to breed to him. I was so fortunate to get a litter before he died at way too young an age. From Gilligan, Contessa produced Ch. Covy's Felita of Tucker Hill C.D. ROM, and Covy’s Flanigan of Tucker Hill, who needed a major to finish and belonged to a client who decided she didn't want to show dogs anymore. Flanigan was a very large dog, with a beautiful head, temperament and a character like his mother. Flanigan was Manhattan's sire. Cappy and I bred Ch. Tucker Hill's Angelique to Grand Victor Ch. Lakeside's Harrigan ROM; he was a brother to Gilligan and lived in Washington at Von Naussau kennel. He was owned by the Mesdags. This produced the famous Spice litter. Much is written about them. We bred the Contessa and Angelique lines together many times to produce many champions. The ultimate female from this breeding was G.V.Ch. Covy's Rosemary of Tucker Hill ROM, who we bred to Flanigan to line-breed on the famous brothers Gilligan and Harrigan, while combining our two female lines. Manhattan was a big, dark puppy, full of the joy of life. He was not a large dog, but well proportioned. We sold a co-ownership in him at 8 months to a show home. I finished his championship with a five point major at a specialty show, and his co-owner showed him at the Golden Gate Kennel Cub show, where he won first in the group. Manhattan had an exceptionally strong temperament, and a character that could not be overlooked. His character drew attention wherever he went, people and judges loved him. Our co-owners were getting a divorce, and decided they had to sell Manhattan. Douglas Crane bought him for Shirley Braunstein and later a co-ownership was sold to Jane Firestone by James Moses. James Moses was his ultimate handler. We would go to as many shows as we could just to see him. He never forgot Cappy and I, and always greeted us with enthusiasm. He was such a star and James Moses trained, handled, and showed him, with the help of Sharon Dwier Newcomb, to absolute perfection. They were an amazing team. I went when he was shown and won the group at Westminster, before he won the big show. Then Jim told us that Cappy and I should fly back to watch him show for the last time at Westminster. It was, to put it mildly, the thrill of a lifetime. Connie Beckhardt was with us on that night. I can't say enough about Manhattan’s character, and he loved getting attention from everyone, and people just loved him. At the Santa Barbara show I was sitting by a woman who told her neighbor that if the judge didn't put Manhattan BIS, the crowd would run her out of town. He won and everyone went wild with joy, including Manhattan, his tail never stopped wagging. We were all worried that at 8 years, in his final attempt at Westminister that he might not win, but the crowd went wild and he was selected as the winner. The memory gives me chills to this day. Manhattan lives on in our hearts and in the hearts of everyone who had the good fortune to know him, or spend some time with him.
